A tablescape has one job: to make people want to stay at it. Everything else is decoration.
Start with linen and light
Textured natural linen in ivory, bone or oat gives depth that satin cannot. Then layer candlelight low and dense — tapers in glass, votives every eighteen inches — so faces are lit from below at dinner.
The height rule
Keep everything under twelve inches or above twenty-four. Anything between blocks eye contact across the table, which is the fastest way to kill the energy of a dinner.

Wine country grows extraordinary flowers. Dahlias, cosmos, olive and bay from farms within thirty miles cost less, last longer and look like where you are.
