Writing a Ceremony That Does Not Sound Like Everyone Else's

Guests forgive a plain ceremony backdrop. They never quite forgive twelve minutes of generic officiant script.
Structure that works
A shape we use constantly, running about twenty-two minutes:
- Processional — 3 minutes
- Welcome and one story about the couple — 4 minutes
- One reading, chosen by someone who loves you — 2 minutes
- Officiant reflection — 4 minutes
- Vows — 4 minutes
- Rings, pronouncement, kiss — 3 minutes
- Recessional — 2 minutes
Writing vows people feel
Make one specific promise about an ordinary day, not a grand one. Name a habit, a place, a running joke. Read them aloud in the car until you can get through without your voice breaking on the first line.
What to cut
Multiple readings, long family acknowledgements that belong in toasts, and any ritual you cannot explain the meaning of in one sentence.
