This is a composite of recent 120-guest weddings at private and vineyard venues in Sonoma County, at a $220,000 total.
Where the money goes
Roughly, as a share of total spend:
- Catering and beverage — 32 percent
- Venue and site fees — 14 percent
- Rentals, tenting and restrooms — 13 percent
- Florals and design — 12 percent
- Photography and film — 10 percent
- Planning and design — 9 percent
- Music and production — 6 percent
- Attire, beauty, stationery, transport — 4 percent
The four costs couples forget
Service charge and tax on catering, which can add 30 percent to that line. Power and lighting at raw-land venues. Guest transport. And a 5 to 8 percent contingency, which we treat as non-negotiable.
Where to spend and where to hold back
Spend on food, light, sound and comfort. Hold back on printed volume, favours, and anything above eye level in a room guests will only be in after dark.
